Fallen officers remembered at DPS Peace Officer Memorial

Trump ran for president on a "law and order" platform, promising to "empower our law enforcement officers to do their jobs and keep our streets free of crime and violence". Originally, Police Memorial Day was celebrated only in Washington, D.C., but local memorial service observances across the country began in 1982.

Boca's police Honor Guard marched into the police plaza Monday to raise a flag while the department's rifle team fired three shots in salute to officers.

President Donald Trump proclaimed Monday, May 15, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and this entire week, as Police week.

He gave the keynote address at a memorial service in Washington for police officers wounded or killed in the line of duty.

"I've been in law enforcement for 37 years, so I know more than a handful of the names on the list unfortunately", says Barre Police Chief Tim Bombardier.

In describing the qualities of a true hero, state police Major Steven Nigrelli said slain officers willingly gave up their lives to save others.

Gov. Greg Abbott was the keynote speaker for the event honoring the Texas troopers, special agents and Texas Rangers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

"Regardless of how they died in the line of duty, we are here to remember them and honor them", Michael said. He expressed his support for law enforcement.

Twenty-nine years after Sgt. Sadek's death, his sister still attends the annual memorial.

"This is a service that we wish we never had to participate in", Scott said. As each name was read, family members of the fallen officer received a rose from the department.
