PGA Tour extends FedEx Cup sponsorship for 10 years

Rory McIlroy won it a year ago.

It keeps the same name of the FedEx Cup for what will be the first 21 years of the competition.

Rory McIlroy claimed the title past year when he won both the Dell Technologies Championship and the Tour Championship within the space of a month to edge out Dustin Johnson to the top prize.

"As we went through this process, we've identified a number of ways for us to continue to enhance the magnitude and outcome of the FedEx Cup, and that's complicated", Monahan told reporters without revealing financial details of the new deal.

"The FedEx relationship has been invaluable to the PGA Tour on multiple fronts for more than 30 years, beginning with its sponsorship of the FedEx St. Jude Classic", PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said.

Revenue, however, continued to climb, up to $244 million this quarter compared to $165 million in the same quarter a year earlier. He said the company is benefitting from efforts on artificial intelligence developed by the Google Brain and DeepMind operations.

The courier services company, which partnered the PGA Tour in 1985, started the season-long FedEx Cup competition in 2007 with the victor receiving $35 million in bonus money. With FedEx on board for the long-term, the Tour will now look to shorten the FedExCup tournament to three final events, rather than the typical four. Discussions between the parties have been ongoing for some time; Monahan late Monday afternoon called the extension "critical" for the Tour in terms of having a stabilized foundation as it moves into the future.

"We are proud to extend our historic sponsorship of the FedExCup, which has dramatically changed the PGA TOUR", said Patrick Fitzgerald, senior vice president, Integrated Marketing and Communications for FedEx.

"Whether or not we make any changes, we haven't made any firm decisions, but that is what I'm referring to when I talk about flexibility".

"One, for your players, it's a validation of what was started 11 years ago, and it gives them confidence and excitement to know that the Cup is going to grow in stature and importance", Monahan said. The FedEx extension was announced after Woods had his fourth back surgery and will spend at least the rest of the season recovering.

Monahan said it would be hard to handicap - is the Tour 50 percent there, or maybe 75 percent? - but he believes the FedEx Cup and its playoff formula can be improved.
