Tornadoes in Wisconsin, Oklahoma leave 2 dead

"My thoughts and prayers are with those affected by the tornado in Elk City tonight", Oklahoma Gov. But Fire Chaplain Danny Ringer told reporters at the scene late Tuesday that one person was known dead from the twister.

Elk County Schools announced that all Wednesday classes are canceled.

In Wisconsin, a tornado tore through a mobile home park, killing at least one person and injuring several others. Barron County is planning to open a volunteer reception center at Friday to coordinate cleanup efforts at the trailer park.

Fitzgerald said local and state officials are calling it a tornado, but that hasn't been confirmed by the National Weather Service.

"I know there were walls on top of people", Fitzgerald told CNN affiliate WCCO and other media outlets.

Dale Daily, 61, said he heard the warning siren about a half-hour before the tornado hit the mobile home park.

Mayor Jeff Martin in nearby Chetek (sheh-TEK') says turkeys can be seen wandering in the damage.

"He had some bad head trauma going on and I didn't want him to go to sleep", Daily said.

In Elk City, a community of about 13,000 people roughly 110 miles west of Oklahoma City, Matt Bynum considers himself lucky.

Scattered tornadoes have been reported in the nation's midsection. The area stretches from the Texas Panhandle through Oklahoma, western Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa into Minnesota and Wisconsin.

In addition to the threat for violent tornadoes, damaging winds gusts to 70 miles per hour, large hail and torrential downpours will be the most widespread impacts.
