Trump touts ultimate peace, but same obstacles remain

Trump has repeatedly underscored US support for Israel during his first global trip as president.

But while Mr Trump spoke in generalities about the goal, Mr Abbas laid out the specifics of Palestinian demands - which all have been supported by the Arabs and rejected by Israel through decades of unsuccessful peace negotiations shepherded by American presidents.

Kushner reportedly told Herzog, "We are planning to move fast in starting a diplomatic process in order to reach a deal", adding that Greenblatt planned to return Thursday for a followup so as not to leave a "diplomatic vacuum".

Speaking at the Israel Museum on Tuesday during a 28-hour visit to the Jewish state, the USA president said "Jerusalem is a sacred city". That in itself is a problem: When the USA takes too large a role in the talks, it removes the pressure from Palestinian and Israeli diplomats to arrive at a deal on their own.

He made these remarks in the presence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara.

Speaking in the Middle East on his first foreign trip, Trump said he would not call those responsible "monsters, because they would like that term. There's a lot of love out there".

The White House noted that Trump and Netanyahu discussed the current situation in Syria and the need for a political solution to the ongoing conflict in that country. In a short side trip to Bethlehem, Trump said he was "gratified" that Abbas "was committed to taking firm but necessary steps to fight terrorism and confront its hateful ideology".

British authorities say that at this point, they believe only one suicide attacker detonated himself at the Manchester Arena in Northern England, where Monday night's bombing took place after a concert by Ariana Grande.

The worldwide community regards all Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories as illegal and a major obstacle to Middle East peace.

The state government said Chandrashekhar Azad associated to a local Dalit outfit Bhim Sena would be arrested soon. Internet and mobile messaging services were suspended to prevent mischievous rumours from being spread.

What he did cite repeatedly was Iran, along with his vow to prevent Iran not only from "possessing" nuclear weapons, but for speech and actions that call for Israel's destruction.

Before departing for the Vatican - the final leg of the president's first overseas trip, which also included Saudi Arabia - Trump gave a keynote address at the Israel Museum.

President Trump weighed in on the attack today.

"We are ready to open dialogue with our Israeli neighbours to build confidence and create a real opportunity for peace", he said after talks with Trump. He has since said the move was still being looked at.

As Daniel pointed out, Trump came face-to-face with a major symbol of Israel's occupation during his journey to Bethlehem this morning "when his motorcade sped through a gap in the Israeli separation barrier that separates Israel from the West Bank".

Abbas referred to Trump's "historic" visit Monday to "occupied East Jerusalem", where Trump visited some of the sites holiest to Jews and Christians. He was not accompanied by any Israeli leaders during the visit. They are losers. And we will have more of them.

Abbas also spoke of Palestinian insistence that all "final status issues" be resolved "based on global law" and United Nations resolutions, as well as the Arab Peace Initiative first offered more than a decade ago.

It later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognised by the global community and claims the entire city as its capital.
