Virender Sehwag applies for position of Team India head coach

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) last week invited applications for a new head coach as incumbent Kumble's one-year term comes to an end at the end of the ICC Champions Trophy in June. Lalchand Rajput who is now the coach of Afghanistan national team was the manager of the winning Indian cricket team for the Twenty20 World Championship 2007 held in South Africa and later served as the Mumbai Indians coach in the maiden edition of IPL.

The two Indians among applicants are former fast bowler Dodda Ganesh and former India A coach Lalchand Rajput. In all likelihood, captain Virat Kohli will get his way.

Sehwag has been the front-runner ever since his name was suggested by a powerful group in BCCI. Maybe there will be nobody else applying for the job.

The former India opener has no coaching experience though he has been the Kings XI Punjab team's mentor in the last two seasons. Ganguly, along with VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and Sanjay Jagdale were a part of the selection committee that chose Kumble for the coach's job past year. "And, since the BCCI had back-up options for the captaincy then in Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble, it took time for Ganguly to muster the support he needed", added the former player. It means that Moody and Pybus stand no chance as of now.

"The board wants to go through the process of selection of coach again".

India is slated to play in West Indies, South Africa and against Australia and Sri Lanka later this year.

Former India pacer Ganesh was only in news a year ago for being part of Kannada television reality show "Bigg Boss season 4".

Kohli was equivocal in his response to the success India have had under Kumble. The South African, Jennings, had even said, "Kohli is a very talented kid but sometimes thinks he is better than the game". In the words of one official familiar with the details, Kumble has been conducting himself like a "headmaster" at a school. "The players and coach do not share a cordial relationship", is what has been explained.

"We've been told that there is a WhatsApp group created by Kumble of his few trusted media friends and few confidential talks between him and senior players were leaked through that", a report in DNA quoted an unnamed senior BCCI official as saying.
