Actress Sandra Bullock won an Oscar for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy, the woman who helped Oher rise despite homelessness and parents who battled addiction or spent time in prison.

The Carolina Panthers released Oher on Thursday after he failed a physical.

Oher played just three games last season in September because of a concussion he received and nearly a year later, he has yet to be cleared to play.

National Football League offensive lineman Michael Oher, who faces misdemeanor charges of assaulting an Uber driver, has been sued in connection with the incident.

He had three years remaining on his contract, but as part of his injury protection benefits, the 31-year-old Oher is guaranteed $900,000.

The move to release Oher was made by interim general manager Marty Hurney, who was hired Wednesday. His release saved the Panthers $1.69 million toward the salary cap.

"The most important thing is his health", Rivera said, per the Panthers' official website. "Michael understood and we expressed that to him", Rivera continued. He faces a misdemeanor assault charge, stemming from an altercation with an Uber driver in April.

Oher was the subject of the movie "The Blind Side".

Oher was a first-round draft pick in 2009 and played in two Super Bowls, winning a championship with the Baltimore Ravens in February 2013.

Oher played for the Tennessee Titans in 2014 to be released one year later after he struggled on the field and with former head coach Ken Whisenhunt.
