Lucky Whitehead's week of drama wasn't worth keeping him for the Cowboys

The Cowboys have cut wide receiver Lucky Whitehead after court documents revealed he was accused of shoplifting in Virginia and then failed to appear at his arraignment.

Although Whitehead understandably doesn't like the way his parting happened, the Cowboys probably did him a favor.

Early on Monday, TMZ reported Whitehead had been arrested on June 22. When he did not show up for his court date, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Whitehead's off-field incident is only the tip of the iceberg for the Cowboys.

"We evaluate the situation and how it was handled by the player after the incident and we evaluate the body of work", coach Jason Garrett said. That tallied with Whitehead's agent, Dave Rich, who said his client wasn't in the state at the time of the theft.

Police confirmed they are "currently seeking the identity of the man involved in the incident" and "working with the Prince William County Commonwealth Attorney's Office to clear Mr. Whitehead from this investigation". "I didn't know about a warrant that came about in the first place clearly because I wasn't the person arrested".

Dallas moved quickly in letting Whitehead go after two of its players had been arrested during the recent offseason.

Police are not releasing that video to the media because of the ongoing investigation, he added. The video of the drowning, shared online by the teens, has stirred outrage among viewers.

The Prince William County Police Department in Virginia issued a statement today in which they said Whitehead was misidentified as the culprit. Let me clear my name.

Whitehead reportedly has another court date scheduled for August 10. The man arrested at the convenience store did not have an ID but gave police all of Whitehead's information, including his name, date of birth and social security number.

"The police department regrets the impact these events had on Mr. Whitehead and his family", the statement said.

The next thing to add to the list is the arrest of WR Lucky Whitehead.

"I don't think it's anything to do with anybody else", Jones said.

Used primarily as a return specialist, Whitehead signed as undrafted rookie free agent out of Florida Atlantic and is beginning his third season with Dallas.
