Donald Glover, Julia Louis-Dreyfus take home comedy Emmys

Friday, 22 Sep, 2017

The news was broken by star Julia Louis-Dreyfus herself last month; the actress explained that, "It became clear that this season should be the last season". Janney, an Emmys favorite, has already won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on Mom, but this year she was upgraded to lead actress.

"Veep" did, however, win the most important award for comedy shows: Outstanding Comedy Series.

Louis-Dreyfus has won two Emmys for previous roles: one for her role in "Seinfeld" and one for her role in "The New Adventures of Old Christine".

After an incredible run, the HBO comedy sensation Veep is heading into its seventh and final season.

Cloris Leachman, who also studied theatre at Northwestern, earned her eight Emmys in a variety of categories: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy, Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, Guest Actress in a Drama Series, Continued or Single Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Variety or Musical, and more.

Can't watch the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards?

"Veep" is competing with "Atlanta"; "black-ish,"; "Master of None"; "Silicon Valley"; "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and "Modern Family", which, with five previous wins in the category, is tied with "Frasier" for most top-series awards ever.

First-time Emmy host Stephen Colbert kicked off the show with an interesting surprise, bringing former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on stage. The show also took home its first Outstanding Variety Show Emmy since 1993. During her acceptance speech Dreyfus called her part on the show the "role of a lifetime". A third person joked: "Julia Louis Dreyfus is like the Meryl Streep of TV".

This would mean it won't be eligible at the 2018 Emmys, as shows that are nominated that year have to have broadcast episodes prior to May 31.
