At least one person dead in California fires

Several of the fires remained out of control, as thousands of firefighters battled wind gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour.

Ken Pimlott, director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, said the fires started around 10 p.m. local time Sunday.

In total, SFGate reports there are now 14 fires burning across eight counties in Northern California, including other fires that were sparked in Butte, Yuba, and Nevada counties.

Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday issued an emergency proclamation for Napa, Sonoma and Yuba counties after wildfires damaged infrastructure, threatened homes and spurred evacuations.

Mandatory evacuations were in place for multiple areas in Napa County.

Fountaingrove Inn, Santa Rosa: The 124 room luxury hotel, which was visible from Highway 101, "fell victim to the devastating fire in Sonoma County", according to a message general manager Justin Hayman posted on Facebook. As the evacuations expand, residents are being forced to move to shelters, schools have canceled class and the Santa Rosa Police Department warned the rapidly expanding fires are a "life-threatening situation".
