Oculus GO debuts as a new standalone virtual reality headset

Facebook's new headset, called Oculus Go, uses internal cameras, sensors and software to track movements that are translated into corresponding motion in virtual worlds rendered in headsets.

At such an affordable price point, Oculus Go might be the catalyst the VR industry needs to continue delivering out-of-this-world experiences.

The stand-alone headset doesn't require plugging in a smartphone or a cord tethering it to a personal computer like other VR, or virtual reality, headsets.

"I can see what Oculus is trying to achieve with the Oculus Go headset but for standalone headsets to prosper I think they need to deliver on a number of fronts", Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games research at IHS Markit, told MCV.

Developers will build new apps to make people able to work with both the Oculus Go and the old Gear VR. "We get a lot of requests for stuff like that", Barra says of arcade-style VR.

Zuckerburg did confirm a $199 U.S. price tag however, leading us to believe that the standalone VR headset will cost £199 in the UK.

"It's such a new way of communicating that business services, such as Cisco's Spark, will add immersive computing capabilities as a way for business to get started in VR", he said. "Opening up more of those experiences to more of us - that's not isolating, that's freeing".

Facebook also said that the device would include spatial audio instead of headphones.

These types of VR are not always embraced by customers due to the high price the companies ask, and because the systems usually need a high-tech computer to work.

It's also a worthy competitor to those cheap VR headsets under Microsoft's new "Mixed Reality" umbrella.
