Potential Tropical Cyclone 18 develops in Caribbean, expected to become Philippe

Saturday, 28 Oct, 2017

"It's very typical for October and it's not at all unusual for tropical storms to form in the western Caribbean", Feltgen said.

The system doesn't have a defined center of circulation but it could bring tropical storm conditions to Cuba and the Bahamas, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Per the NHC, there is a medium chance that this could develop into a weak tropical system before reaching Florida, though conditions will be only somewhat favorable for development as it drifts north over the western Caribbean.

The next name on the list of 2017 Atlantic Storm Names is 'Philippe'.

In its Friday morning tropical advisory, the hurricane center said, "Shower and thunderstorm activity has increased and become more concentrated in association with a trough of low pressure over the northwestern Caribbean Sea". Regardless of any further development, the invest will have little impact on the Big Bend and South Georgia as the moisture and heavy rainfall will remain over South Florida.

A faster northward motion is expected to begin tonight, followed by a faster motion toward the northeast on Saturday and Sunday.

The disturbance is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Cuba during the next two days.

The window of opportunity for this cluster of storms to get its act together is narrow - it can't be too close to land like it is now, and it has to beat the approaching cold front and associated strong vertical wind shear.

Officials said the rains could spread into portions of south Florida and the Keys on Saturday and then over the northwestern Bahamas Saturday evening into Sunday.

An Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft was scheduled to investigate the tropical system Friday afternoon, if necessary.
